53rd NFPA Education Conference

For Foster, Adoptive & Kinship Parents, Friends, Families and Supporters

Trainer: Mrs. Jennifer Patrick

Description:

Advocacy for FAK Parents!

Too often, foster parents get licensed before they inform or invite relatives and friends into their journey. In this working session, foster, adoptive and kinship parents will learn how to present to their family and friends both the joys of fostering as well as the burdens of care that cause toxic stress and secondary trauma, leading many to close their license.

Participants will develop a strategy with practical steps to invite family and friends to become their support team providing meals, respite and resources. The “support team build” is an evidence-based recruitment model that often leads support team members to become licensed foster parents.
